An unfair world trading system sees rich countries getting richer and developing countries remaining poor. A fair world trading system is vital if developing countries are to lift themselves out of poverty.
Fair trade is a trading partnership based on dialogue, transparency and respect. Fair trade seeks a greater amount of equity in trade.
Fact 1: A target of Millennium Development Goal 8 is to develop further an open, rule-based, predictable, non-discriminatory trading and financial system.
Fact 2: The proportion of all developing countries’ exports receiving true preferential duty free treatment has not increased for the past 10 years (Millennium Development Goal Report 2009).
Fact 3: The proportion of least developed countries’ exports receiving true preferential duty free treatment increased from 35% in the late 1990s to more than 50% in 2007 (Millennium Development Goal Report 2009).
